piazza san marco, venice, meets challenger, cape canaveral

A library book about extreme weather was lying on my desk on the same day that a postcard from Venice arrived in the post. The book had fallen open at a page showing the space shuttle Challenger just before it exploded. I read the postcard and put it down next to the book, and a startling coincidence appeared in front of me. The similarities between the two images were so uncanny that I was at a loss as to what to do with them. For many years I have kept the book in the dark, opening it from time to time, using the postcard as a bookmark for its matching page.
